What do Powder by La Pelcha and the Canadian Prime Minister’s wife, Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau have in common? We both adore Lucian Matis’ breathtaking eveningwear.
Yes, you heard it first: Powder’s favorite designer is Lucian Matis. This Canadian based designer has captured our hearts with a flutter of shimmery silks and splendid lace.
The last time we met to discuss his spring 2017 collection, we also had a chance to ask him about his work and background. Now we can finally introduce you to the one and only Lucian Matis!
Born in the historic city of Blaj, Romania, little Lucian’s flair for fashion became apparent when, at the age of 7, he designed a Mickey Mouse sweater in his mom’s tailor shop. It was at the same shop that he perfected his techniques and gained firsthand experience in the industry. Since then, he studied fine arts in Europe with acclaim before launching his eponymous collection in Canada.
“When I design clothes I don’t think of trends,” Lucian proclaims, “I think of how it will look on the body and the occasion they’re wearing it for.” That is why all his dresses lie in the most flattering manner. We fell head over heels for his peplum dresses in rich blooming colors which accentuate the hips in an understated, yet transformative manner.
His knack for dressing every type of figure stems from a passion for making all people who wear a Lucian Matis design look their absolute best. “I always think about what looks good on a more Sophia Loren-type woman. I enjoy using interesting materials to lend dramatic emphasis to flatter the body, and I love the curves – it’s real! Our collection goes up to size 20, and I feel that If I can make a size 20 look gorgeous and feel gorgeous, I’ve done my job.”
Needless to say, his collection receives rave reviews from our clientele. A petite girl would exclaim “I found the engagement dress!” at the sight of a Lucian Matis design made of black-and-white striped heavenly lace. Another would enthuse over a clean white dress with tubular gold applique and geometric cut-outs.
While you may have seen some of his work featured in publications like Elle Canada, WWD, Project Runway Canada and Canada’s Next Top Model, you can be sure that our favorite place to see his designs is in Powder boutique!
